Featured Project: Marion Correctional Institution

Several years ago, Dr. Murthy Kola (Winebrenner Doctor of Ministry alumnus) approached the Seminary about teaching courses at Marion Correctional Institute (MCI) in Marion, Ohio. For many years, Dr. Kola has been the chaplain at MCI. For the following four years, Winebrenner took a group of students through the Pastoral Training Institute curriculum. At the end there was a completion ceremony with much celebration!

Winebrenner is pleased to be back at MCI since fall of 2019 to once again teach courses. The Warden describes MCI as a “mini-city” because of the 2,000+ residents, plus staff. The Warden listed Winebrenner as one of the best things they have done to help residents with self-improvement. The program’s value is, as expected, because students gain a perspective for improving the whole person (a Winebrenner value). However, there is an additional component that makes fit hand-and-glove with Winebrenner. The graduates of the first cohort are now leaders among the residents of MCI, participating in “all the positive things” and leading other residents into similar choices. In short, Winebrenner went there to prepare servant leaders to bring transformation in the Church and world by participating in God’s ministry of reconciliation, preparing servant leaders. That is exactly what is happening!

Juan Martinez – from Inmate to Minister

Juan Martinez was part of the first cohort of Winebrenner’s training institute at Marion Correctional Institution. He graduated from the program and completed his sentence. When he was released from MCI in June 2018, Juan took time to pray and discern where he could serve Christ and apply his Winebrenner training. February 2019, he accepted a full-time position as the Director of Communications and Development with Kindway/Embark Prison Ministry near Columbus, Ohio. He emphasizes, “I just want to be where God wants me to be because I’ve spent enough time not being where God wants me.” You can read more about Juan’s story here.
