In Memoriam: Dr. David E. Draper [President Emeritus, Winebrenner Seminary]

I know there was a time when I didn’t know Dave Draper, but I’m having difficulty remembering those years. Like many reading this, I’ve known Dave for decades and have many stories of him as a teacher, mentor, and spiritual guide.

My first formal interactions with him were in the mid to late 1990s when I was a student at Winebrenner Seminary. He was President during my years as a student and taught a course on “Formational Leadership” that was a required part of my Master of Divinity curriculum. That course was definitely formational for me; it was during that class that I began to clarify my calling toward higher education. Dr. Draper allowed me to adapt one of my assignments so I could participate in a leadership meeting at Winebrenner. That entire experience was transformational. As a teacher, Dave Draper directly contributed to the path I would follow as an educator, professor, and eventually as President at Winebrenner.

When I accepted the invitation to serve as the President of Winebrenner Seminary, I followed Dave’s 27 years of service in this position. At the time of his retirement, he was the longest serving President among the schools accredited by the Association for Theological Schools. He provided space for conversations and words of encouragement in ways unknown to most. When the changing climate of theological education required some major decisions on the part of Winebrenner, Dave’s public support never wavered (although, we did have some spirited conversations between the two of us!).

Dave was a teacher, mentor, and friend. His death is a major loss for many of us.

Over the past week I’ve had many conversations about the influence of Dave and Linda Draper. With Dave’s passing on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, these stories take on new significance. I am grieving his loss yet know that he is celebrating with Jesus.

You are invited to reply with stories or reach out for further conversation. Many others are writing about his life and ministry and you are welcome to read more there as well by clicking below:
